High-Pressure High-Temperature (HPHT) Method
Technical Principle:
It simulates the formation environment of natural diamonds in the mantle. Using graphite as the carbon source, under high pressure of 5-7GPa and high temperature of 1300-1600℃, with the help of metal catalysts such as iron, nickel, and cobalt to reduce the conversion conditions, carbon atoms dissolve and then deposit on the diamond seed crystal for crystallization.
Process Flow:
Place the diamond seed crystal, graphite raw material, and metal catalyst in the growth chamber of a six-sided top press, apply high temperature and high pressure, create a temperature difference of 20-50℃ to drive carbon atoms to diffuse and deposit on the seed crystal. Gem-quality crystals can be generated within a few days to a few weeks.
Technical Characteristics:
The cost is low, about 200 US dollars per carat, suitable for the production of small particles of 1-3 carats; the color is mainly D-E color, with stable quality. China monopolizes 80% of the global production capacity, and Henan contributes more than 90%. The single-machine production capacity of domestic six-sided top presses has increased by 300% within five years, with a single furnace output reaching more than 300 carats, and the cost has dropped to 30% of that of natural diamonds.
Application Scenarios:
In the industrial field, it is used to manufacture superhard tools such as cutting tools and drill bits; in the jewelry field, it is suitable for small carat, color-stable diamond jewelry.
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) Method
Technical Principle:
In a low-pressure (10-100 Torr) vacuum environment, carbon-containing gases such as methane are excited by microwave or radio frequency plasma, and the dissociated carbon atoms are deposited layer by layer on the surface of the diamond seed crystal to achieve epitaxial growth.
Process Flow:
Put the diamond seed crystal into a vacuum reaction chamber, introduce a mixed gas of methane and hydrogen, the plasma excitation decomposes the gas, and carbon atoms grow layer by layer on the surface of the seed crystal. The cycle is 2-4 weeks, and large carat diamonds can be generated.
Technical Characteristics:
The growth environment is pure, making it easy to obtain high-purity, large carat diamonds, suitable for the production of large jewelry-grade particles; colored diamonds can be customized through doping, but the growth cycle is longer, and the cost is relatively slightly higher than that of HPHT.
